A play of life and death, promised in a moment of mortal threat - so the history of the Oberammergau Passion Play began in 1633. In the middle of the Thirty Years´War, after months of suffering and death from the plague, the Oberammergauers swore an oath that they would perform the Play of the Suffering, Death and Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ“ every ten years. At Pentecost 1634, they fulfilled their pledge for the first time on a stage they put up in the cemetery above the fresh graves of the plague victims. In the year 2022, the community of Oberammergau will perform the Passion Play they have preserved throughout the centuries with singular continuity for the 42nd time.

Since 1634, the most famous Passion Play in the world takes place in
Oberammergau. Maintained and experienced almost without interruption for over 380 years, the tradition of performing the play about the suffering, death and resurrection of Christ every ten years will be continued for the 42nd time in 2022 and is regarded as the most important passion play in the world. The village at the edge of the Bavarian Alps expects approximately 500,000 visitors for the passion play, over half of which will be international guests.

All actors of the world ‘s largest amateur dramatic performance come from the village, due to a special play law. All participants, from actors playing the big speaking parts such as Jesus, Mary or Judas, through members of the choir, orchestra members, firemen and ushers, must have been born in Oberammergau or have been living there for at least 20 years

A 3 course dinner is included in the half time break. (Breakfast, Dinner)

My Wife, Son and I did the Christmas and New Year in Europe tour in December 2016.
Here are a few thoughts of our trip, the trip itinerary was perfectly balanced for tours and free time, which gave us enough time to see everything we wanted to see by ourselves and there were walking tours arranged as part of the tour which we were not excepting but found to be very informative and enjoyable.
Our tour guide Maryke, what a gem and an asset to C the World, went over and above what was required of a tour guide duties, even on the free days she invited us to join her if we wanted to explore the city a bit more and freely parted any information relating to the town.
Maryke always had our best interested at heart and nothing was too much trouble for her to assist and address any issues or problems.
We had a great tour party which ranged in age from their early twenties to mid-fifties and this made the trip all the more interesting; it was a fun group, towards the end of the tour you actually felt like you were travelling with family members.
We found the modern coach to be comfortable and the accommodations clean and well located. There was a good mix of free time, guided tours and scenic driving (some days the drive was quite long, but it was broken up with rest stops and lunch breaks and bus bingo and films, good fun. This tour is excellent value for those with wanting to sample many of Europe’s major sites.
